Ski & Sail – Lyngen Alps

What to expect on your ski and sail expedition

From the moment you set foot in the port, you will be escorted to our traditional sailboat, Norøy. You’ll be accompanied by an expert ski guide as we will set sail through breathtaking Norwegian fjords, stopping only to find the best spots for off-piste and backcountry skiing in Norway, while staying mindful of weather and any avalanche risks.

Once anchored, you will reach the shore via dinghy to access pristine, remote ski slopes that are otherwise unreachable.

Don’t worry, this Arctic expedition is not all about skiing. You will also have the unique opportunity to learn traditional Norwegian sailing skills and get hands-on experience to become a confident sailor.

After thrilling days spent enjoying the Arctic cold, you will get a moment to wind down. Enjoy a relaxing sauna and a warm meal to recharge your batteries.

To guarantee the best experience and the utmost level of safety, each eco-friendly ski trip itinerary is carefully curated to reflect the latest weather conditions.

FAQ

Do I need ski touring experience to join?

Do I need ski touring or backcountry skiing experience to join a Ski & Sail trip in Norway?

Yes, a basic level of off -piste skiing is required, as we won’t be skiing in resorts but in backcountry terrain. However, you don’t need to be an expert. A certified ski guide will be on board and will tailor the daily itineraries to match the group’s skills and experience.

What ski gear do I need to bring?

What ski touring equipment and gear do I need to bring for a Ski & Sail expedition in Norway?

You’ll need to bring your own ski touring equipment or arrange a rental before the trip. If you need help finding rental gear, we’ll gladly assist you in locating a local provider.

I’m not a very experienced skier. Can I still join?

Can I join a Ski & Sail trip in Norway if I’m an intermediate skier?

Possibly! Reach out to us and tell us more about your experience level. The ski guide will help assess whether the trip is a good fit. We’ve had families and guests with intermediate skills join before, and the guide always finds suitable terrain for everyone.

What happens if the weather is really bad?

What happens if there is bad weather during a Ski & Sail expedition in Norway?

The itinerary is flexible and adapted daily based on weather and snow conditions. In five years of operating Ski & Sail trips, the captain has never had to cancel a tour. If one day is completely stormy, we’ll enjoy a rest day or warm up in the nearest sauna. There are always great alternatives in the Norwegian fjords.

How much skiing and sailing will we do each day?

How much skiing and sailing will we do each day on a Ski & Sail adventure?

Typically, we ski for 4 to 6 hours a day, sometimes more if the group is up for it. We sail between 2 and 4 hours daily, giving you time to relax or learn how to sail like a true Norwegian skipper if you're curious!

Can we see the Northern Lights during the trip?

Can I see the Northern Lights or Midnight Sun on a Ski & Sail trip in Norway?

Yes! If you join us in March, there’s still a good chance of spotting the Northern Lights. From April onwards, daylight increases rapidly, and by May we have the Midnight Sun, which offers a totally different but equally magical atmosphere.

What are the meals like on board? Is there a chef?

What are the meals like on a Ski & Sail expedition, and is there a chef on board?

When you book, we’ll send you a sample trip menu and ask about any dietary restrictions or allergies. Expect a mix of Norwegian and international cuisine, with waffles and cinnamon rolls for breakfast, and packed lunches you can prepare yourself. Dinner is a shared effort: guests cook and clean in small teams. If you prefer a private chef to prepare all meals, we can arrange that for an additional fee of 15,000 NOK per trip.
