Code of Conduct

Whale Watching Code of Conduct – Nunatak Sailing Company

Nunatak's commitment

We adopt this code to ensure whale watching is exciting and respectful. Our mantra at sea is:

“Observe, don't disturb.”

We believe that responsible tourism and education are the key to conservation. Thank you for participating responsibly and contributing to the future of Arctic cetaceans. Sightings are never guaranteed: we follow the rhythms and the will of the animals, never forcing an encounter. However, our crew will do everything possible to offer you a complete, authentic and unforgettable experience in the Arctic. This code of conduct applies to all species.

1. Regulations and guidelines

We verify and comply with local laws in the territories in which we operate (Norway, Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland). This includes AECO and WCA regulations, as well as IWC and NOAA best practices.

2. Responsible approach

  • Within 300m: reduced speed (≤ 5 to 6 knots) to minimize disturbance.
  • Within 50m: engine in neutral; we get closer approaching the animal from the side, never in front or directly behind.

3. Minimum distances

We maintain a 3000m distance during the research phase, reducing it to 300m (up to 50m if the animal accepts it) during the observation phase.

We do not chase, group or separate animals, especially mothers and calves.

4. Duration of observation

A maximum of 30 minutes total per individual animal or pod.

In high-traffic areas: 15 minutes per boat, with rotation between vessels.

5. Silence and respect

We keep noise to a minimum: soft speech, no whistling or any other artificial sound. No use of sonar.

6. Escape routes and general routes

We do not hinder the animals' passage: we always ensure their paths remain unobstructed.

7. Cooperation between boats

Coordination between operators in the area (max 2–3 boats per group).

8. No contact or feeding

We do not touch, feed or swim with the cetaceans, nor do we use lights and equipment to attract them.

9. Animal welfare monitoring

We continuously monitor behaviors such as: changes in course or speed, rapid dives, tail or fin slaps, evasive behavior.

If we notice signs of disturbance, we move away immediately.

10. Education and awareness

We inform and educate guests about these guidelines and encourage them to keep a respectful behavior at all times.

11. Zero waste and low consumption

No waste is discharged into the sea. We minimize the use of plastic, ensure energy efficiency and silent maintenance in eco-zones.

12. Respect for protected areas

We comply with regulations for marine protection zones, reducing traffic and noise impact.
