Why us?

Sustainable Arctic travel
with Nunatak

At Nunatak, we are rooted in tradition and guided by respect. We deeply value the cultural and historical heritage of the Arctic regions we explore, and it is shown in every part of our expeditions. From our use of a traditional wooden sailboat, to the local Norwegian food we taste, the stories we share, and the way we engage with each community we visit.

At Nunatak, we believe less is more. Our Arctic journeys are purposefully intimate — with a maximum of 12 guests on day trips and just 6–7 on week‑long expeditions. Whether exploring Greenland or Svalbard, you’ll sail aboard a traditional wooden vessel, becoming part of the crew—not just a tourist—and immersing yourself in genuine cultural and natural connection.

Our boat is built for the Arctic — and for comfort. With a cozy indoor steering station and large panoramic windows, you can stay warm and dry while still enjoying breathtaking views of whales, orcas, and majestic coastlines. Even in rain or freezing temperatures, you’ll stay connected to the spectacle outside. A covered aft deck ensures you can experience the elements in any weather.

What Nunatak means

The name Nunatak comes from the Inuit language, and it describes a mountain peak rising above the ice of a glacier. Isolated yet grounded, it symbolizes the raw, untamed beauty of the places we explore.

That’s what we offer: meaningful Arctic travel, sailing Norway’s fjords, far from the crowds and close to what really matters. Join us and dive into the heart of the North.

Our story

A love story
born at sea

Nunatak Sailing Company was born from a love story not just between two people, but between both of us and the wild Arctic seas of Norway.

We met on a sailing expedition in Norway. Haakon was the captain; I was the photographer. It was one of those rare, instant connections. From the very start, we talked about our shared love for the sea, for untamed places, and for the stories they hold.

Haakon had spent years sailing as a skipper, guiding small groups through the fjords of Northern Norway. I had spent mine chasing northern lights and the beauty of cold as an outdoor photographer, forever fascinated by pirates and untamed places.Soon after we met, the dream began to take shape.

What if we had our own boat?
Our own company?
We knew it wouldn’t be easy.

But we also knew we’d never settle for anything less.
